Energy drinks bathe your teeth in acid
In the magazine of the Academy of General Dentistry published in May and June 2012, Dr. Poonam Jain, warns about this in his article:
“Adults and young people consume these drinks assuming that they will improve their sports performance and energy levels and that they are better for them than carbonated drinks. Most of these patients are surprised to learn that these drinks practically bathe their teeth in acid.
The danger of energy drinks
To test the study, researchers used 13 sports drinks and nine energy drinks. They dipped human teeth into each drink for 15 minutes, then immersed them for two hours in artificial saliva. These tests were performed four times daily for five days. According to Dr. Jain, this test emulated the exposure of most American teenagers to these drinks. One tremendous fact: 18% of children between the ages of three and ten drink energy drinks.
Results of exposure to energy drinks
The result was that after only five days of exposure, the enamel had been irreversibly damaged, with energy drinks doing twice the damage to the teeth.
The study warns that you should wait at least one hour after drinking an energy drink before brushing your teeth. If you do so earlier, you will spread acid on the surface of your teeth, increasing erosion.
Another study conducted in 2011 and published in the journal Pediatrics, warned that young people are the public with the greatest danger, since safe consumption levels have not been established. In this type of public there may be undiscovered heart or metabolic problems, which may be aggravated by the consumption of energy drinks. Not to mention that they have almost 75 grams of sugar in each drink, three times the daily consumption recommended by the WHO. To translate this, a single energy drink would be equivalent to 15 sachets of sugar.
Side effects of energy drinks
A study conducted in Germany since 2002 concluded that two well-known brands of energy drinks have caused “convulsions, psychotic disorders, kidney failure, respiratory disorders, tachycardia, cardiac arrhythmias, liver damage, agitation, rhabdomyolysis, hypertension, heart failure and death.
Banned energy drinks and their regulation
A number of countries have already echoed the dangers of energy drinks and tried to ban them. France was one of them, but after a petition from some companies in the sector to the European Commission, the ban was revoked. Energy drink brands argued that there was no evidence that their product was actively dangerous.
Due to the side effects of energy drinks, some German states, Australia, Denmark, England, Turkey and Uruguay have imposed restrictions, prohibiting their sale to children under 16.
