The danger of energy drinks

The consequences of energy drinks are not fully known. We have been sold the idea that they are used to keep attention, to perform better or to keep you awake. But energy drinks have far greater dangers than their supposed benefits.

Everyone knows that drinking beverages high in caffeine and other stimulants causes irreversible damage to the cardiovascular system. But did you know that they directly affect your teeth and increase the risk of losing your teeth? Is this surprising? Read on, we’ll explain why energy drinks are bad.

Man without teeth and irreversible damage from energy drinks

Teenagers are the biggest consumers and therefore the most at risk when consuming these types of drinks. Giving isotonic drinks to children does not pose a danger to them, as long as they are those that do not have added sugar. But many people do not know the difference between a sports drink and an energy drink. The latter has a high level of acidity, which causes erosion of the enamel by modifying the PH of our mouth. This type of damage to the outside of the teeth is irreversible and without such protection, the teeth become more sensitive and prone to decay.

In the case of sportsmen and women, the consumption of energy drinks, apart from increasing acidity, provides a large amount of sugar that is stored in the mouth. By exercising and increasing body temperature, it accelerates the process of enamel destruction. Here you can see a picture of a man without teeth after drinking energy drinks and snowboarding.

Energy drinks bathe your teeth in acid

In the magazine of the Academy of General Dentistry published in May and June 2012, Dr. Poonam Jain, warns about this in his article:

“Adults and young people consume these drinks assuming that they will improve their sports performance and energy levels and that they are better for them than carbonated drinks. Most of these patients are surprised to learn that these drinks practically bathe their teeth in acid.

The danger of energy drinks

To test the study, researchers used 13 sports drinks and nine energy drinks. They dipped human teeth into each drink for 15 minutes, then immersed them for two hours in artificial saliva. These tests were performed four times daily for five days. According to Dr. Jain, this test emulated the exposure of most American teenagers to these drinks. One tremendous fact: 18% of children between the ages of three and ten drink energy drinks.

Results of exposure to energy drinks

The result was that after only five days of exposure, the enamel had been irreversibly damaged, with energy drinks doing twice the damage to the teeth.

The study warns that you should wait at least one hour after drinking an energy drink before brushing your teeth. If you do so earlier, you will spread acid on the surface of your teeth, increasing erosion.

Another study conducted in 2011 and published in the journal Pediatrics, warned that young people are the public with the greatest danger, since safe consumption levels have not been established. In this type of public there may be undiscovered heart or metabolic problems, which may be aggravated by the consumption of energy drinks. Not to mention that they have almost 75 grams of sugar in each drink, three times the daily consumption recommended by the WHO. To translate this, a single energy drink would be equivalent to 15 sachets of sugar.

How many energy drinks can you have per day

Do you know how energy drinks affect your cardiovascular system? Studies have shown that within an hour and a half of drinking them there is a 2.3% reduction in the diameter of the blood vessels. This can cause an acute deterioration in your vascular function.

Excessive caffeine consumption causes nausea, vomiting, heart palpitations, metabolic acidosis and hypertension. It can lead to death and you will remember cases that have even been seen on the news. But without being newsworthy, consuming energy drinks increases the risk of hypertension, heart failure and type 2 diabetes because caffeine decreases insulin tolerance. It is also difficult to find an isotonic drink suitable for diabetics.

To drink the same caffeine as a single energy drink, you would have to drink several cups of coffee. But it is not just the caffeine it contains, but the speed with which it is drunk. A cup of coffee, because it is hot, is drunk more slowly. However, energy drinks are drunk quickly. This sudden increase in caffeine can lead to a heart attack, even if it is the same dose of caffeine as that contained in a cup of coffee.

Finally, mental health specialists, such as Dr. Miguel Angel Harto, have warned that these drinks mask the depressant effect of alcohol, increasing the likelihood of drinking more. Statistics tell us that 47.5% of young people drink mixtures of alcohol with energy drinks.

Banned energy drinks and their regulation

A number of countries have already echoed the dangers of energy drinks and tried to ban them. France was one of them, but after a petition from some companies in the sector to the European Commission, the ban was revoked. Energy drink brands argued that there was no evidence that their product was actively dangerous.

Due to the side effects of energy drinks, some German states, Australia, Denmark, England, Turkey and Uruguay have imposed restrictions, prohibiting their sale to children under 16.
