The Eco-label of the European Union, also known as the EU Ecolabel, is a voluntary ecological certification system used to identify products and services that meet high environmental standards in the European Union.
The label is awarded to products and services that have a reduced environmental impact compared to similar products and services on the market, taking into account their entire life cycle, from production to use and disposal. Products and services that receive the EU Ecolabel must comply with strict environmental performance criteria, including the use of recycled or renewable materials, the reduction of energy and water consumption, the limitation of emissions of hazardous substances, and the improvement of waste management.
The goal of the EU Ecolabel is to promote sustainable production and consumption and reduce the environmental impact of products and services in the EU and beyond. Consumers can easily identify products and services that meet the high environmental standards of the EU Ecolabel thanks to its distinctive logo.
To obtain the EU Ecolabel, products and services must comply with the environmental criteria established for each category of products or services. The criteria are based on a comprehensive life cycle analysis of the product or service, which means that the environmental impact of the entire production process, from raw material extraction to final recycling or disposal, is evaluated.
The criteria also take into account social and health factors, such as product safety and quality. Therefore, products and services that receive the EU Ecolabel are not only environmentally friendly but also safe and of high quality.
Manufacturers, importers, or service providers wishing to obtain the EU Ecolabel must submit an application to the competent body in their country. Each country has a competent body designated by the European Commission to manage the eco-label program in its territory.
Once the application is submitted, a thorough evaluation process is carried out to determine if the product or service meets the environmental criteria. If the product or service meets the criteria, the EU Ecolabel is awarded, and it can be used on the product label or in service advertising. The EU Ecolabel is periodically reviewed to ensure it remains relevant and up to date with the latest environmental technologies and practices.
